Published in 1964 and released in January 1965, ‘A Confederate General from Big Sur’ was the first published novel from Richard Brautigan. The book did not instantly sell well, until his book ‘Trout Fishing in America’ caused a stir and created a cult following for the writer later in the late 60’s. This is a first UK edition, first printed in the UK in 1970
Written when Brautigan was 29 years old, A Confederate General from Big Sur follows the story of Lee Mellon, a man who believes himself to be a descendant of a Confederate general and seeks the truth of his own modern-day war against the status quo of the modern United States in light of the Confederacy's past struggle with the Union.
The inspiration for setting the novel in Big Sur was part reality, and part response to both Henry Miller's memoirBig Sur (1957) and the forthcoming novel by Jack Kerouac,Big Sur, to be published in August 1962
