Nice UK paperback copy of J.D. Salinger's masterful short story, originally published in The New Yorker, 1950
It begins in Devon, where an American sargeant meets a 13 year old girl named Esme and her 5 year old brother Charles before being sent into combat. Weeks after V-E Day, he opens a letter from her. 'For Esme' is a sweet and touching exploration of the relationship between children and adults, and also serves as a tribute to Second World War veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (known at the time as "battle fatigue")
