Original program for Philip Glass's mesmerising 1983 opera 'Akhnaten', based on the life and religious convictions of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten - performed at the London Coliseum, March 1987
It's a unique and stunning work which draws on ancient hymns, prayers and inscriptions sung in their original Egyptian, Hebrew and Akkadian, whilst linked together with the commentary of a modern language. According to Glass, 'Akhnaten' is the culmination of his two other biographical operas, Einstein on the Beach (about Albert Einstein) and Satyagraha (about Mahatma Gandhi). The three figures were chosen as all were driven by an inner vision which altered the age in which they lived (religion, science and politics)
