Nirvana practiced for a number of weeks in preparation for recording a full-length album, after the release of their debut single 'Love Buzz' in November 1988. Apparently Cobain felt pressure from Sub Pop to conform to the sounds of the Seattle grunge scene favoured by the label, and claimed that most of the lyrics were written the night before recording while he was feeling "pissed off".
